Pyth DAO has enacted a policy directing all product revenue to buybacks of PYTH, enhancing its market position and governance efficiency.

The Pyth DAO recently greenlit proposal OP-PIP-136, establishing a framework where 100% of its product-derived income will be channeled into the buyback of PYTH tokens. This decision, announced on October 8, signals a strategic shift in how the DAO is managing its revenue and was officially confirmed by their governance forum, noting that initial purchases began on September 30.
Evolution of Pyth's Revenue Management
Pyth has maintained a PYTH Reserve since December 2025, funded by prior policies requiring the purchase of a third of its non-PYTH treasury balance each month. This approach mandated a voting process for each transaction, contributing to uncertainty and delays in revenue management. The newly adopted framework simplifies these processes. By replacing individual voting requirements with a blanket authorization for ongoing purchases, the DAO aims to create a more streamlined and efficient protocol for managing its revenue allocations.
Purchase Volume Reduction: A Closer Look
Kemar Titi, the proposal’s author, pointed out that monthly buybacks have been on a downward trend. The figures paint a stark picture: buybacks dropped from about 2.75 million PYTH in March to just 669,662 in August. It raises questions about the effectiveness of previous strategies. Even with this decline in buyback volume, Pyth Network still reported impressive growth, achieving approximately $11.5 million in annual recurring revenue by September—an 86% increase quarter-over-quarter. The stark contrast between reduced buybacks and increasing revenue suggests a pivot that might be addressing underlying operational efficiencies.
Understanding the 100% Allocation
The allocation rule applies strictly to the DAO's revenue share, not its gross income. It targets the DAO's 60% stake from products such as Pyth Pro subscriptions, Listing as a Service, the Data Marketplace, and Pyth Indices. It's important to note that Douro Labs retains its contractual revenue share, adding complexity to the distribution framework. This detailed breakdown illustrates the care with which Pyth is analyzing where its income is coming from and how best to channel it for maximum benefit.
Moreover, revenue from users in stablecoins will be managed by the Pythian Council Ops Multisig. This setup will convert the funds to PYTH following stringent trading limits, including a 5% slippage cap and a maximum trade size of $25,000. This meticulous approach aims to minimize volatility in the market and ensure steady accumulation of PYTH tokens. Notably, the council is prohibited from selling, borrowing against, or distributing PYTH tokens acquired through this conversion. Given the volatile market that cryptocurrencies often experience, such measures indicate a commitment to stability.
Interestingly (and this is the part most people overlook), payments made directly in PYTH aren’t classified as buybacks. There was a query during discussions about the DAO’s share from Douro Labs, clarifying that these funds would still be converted to PYTH using USDC. This aspect could lead to potential discussions around how future revenue streams are defined and treated by the community.
The Reserve's reported figures also show some inconsistency, with amounts cited at 41 million PYTH in one instance and 42 million in another. Such discrepancies can foster confusion and might require a more comprehensive approach to transparency and accountability. Mike Cahill, CEO of Douro Labs, claimed that this complete allocation of revenue into the Reserve is indicative of the strongest alignment the network has achieved. This assertion highlights both the trust in the governance model and the potential for future growth if managed effectively.
Implications and Future Outlook
The implications of this new buyback model extend beyond immediate fiscal health. By committing to a 100% allocation of product-derived income toward PYTH token buybacks, the Pyth DAO attempts to stabilize and potentially increase the value of its token. That said, this approach also carries risks. The model hinges on sustained revenue growth and continuous market interest in Pyth’s offerings. If revenue were to stall or decline, the DAO could encounter challenges in maintaining confidence from token holders.
What this means for you, especially if you're working in this space, is that governance models like Pyth’s will likely set precedents for other DAOs. As communities begin to scrutinize token management more critically, transparency and clarity will become even more significant. Maintain a watchful eye on these adjustments; they might signal how other decentralized organizations will evolve their governance practices.
The outcomes of such strategies could play a pivotal role in shaping community trust and engagement. For those invested in or watching the Pyth ecosystem, the trajectory it takes in the coming months will be worth monitoring closely.
