Robinhood is set to launch 10x leveraged crypto perpetual futures and introduce AI trading agents, enhancing tools for active traders.

Robinhood is gearing up to offer U.S. customers the ability to trade crypto perpetual futures with leverage of up to 10x, revealed during its recent HOOD Summit in Houston. CEO Vlad Tenev announced this new feature, emphasizing that profits and losses will settle as frequently as every 15 minutes. This rapid settlement cycle is intended to cater to the needs of traders looking for quick turnovers, reflecting a growing trend towards high-frequency trading within the cryptocurrency space.
Integration of Perpetual Futures
The platform will integrate these futures through Robinhood Derivatives in collaboration with Bitstamp, launching over the coming months. Traders will be able to take both long and short positions on cryptocurrencies including BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, DOGE, ADA, LINK, and HYPE. Notably, Bitcoin and Ether perpetual contracts can be utilized with up to 10x leverage, while the remaining coins will be limited to 3x. This differentiation in leverage is part of Robinhood’s strategy to align with volatility and market liquidity; Bitcoin and Ether represent a significant portion of the crypto market, often exhibiting larger price swings, which could attract both seasoned traders and risk-seeking novices. Robinhood is also positioning itself competitively with a transaction fee of just one basis point (0.01%) for all trades until the year's end. That’s a sharp contrast to many exchanges that charge significantly higher fees.
This initiative builds on recent shifts in the regulatory environment, particularly a development from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) that facilitates U.S. engagements with perpetual futures, allowing platforms like Kalshi and Coinbase to navigate the space more freely. Such regulatory momentum may open the door for more retail trading in futures, yet it also introduces complexities regarding investor protections and market stability that need careful consideration.
Leveraging AI in Trading
In another strategic move, Robinhood will roll out Robinhood Agents, enabling customers to create AI trading assistants within the app. Users will only need to set up a dedicated account and select a model from various AI labs, such as OpenAI. These AI agents will be designed to analyze markets, formulate strategies, and execute trades autonomously. It’s a bold move into an arena typically dominated by professional traders and algorithmic strategies.
Each agent operates solely on funds within its designated account, with a default setting requiring manual approval for each trade. Users can deactivate this feature for complete autonomy, but doing so also raises questions about risk management—if you're not watching, how do you know the AI is making the right moves? An innovative upcoming feature named Loops will allow agents to follow pre-set strategies continuously. Furthermore, users will have access to external data sources from 11 providers, including Nasdaq and Token Terminal, which will enrich the agents' market insights considerably. This addition is likely aimed at democratizing the tools usually available only to institutional traders.
Since starting to allow connections with external AI agents in May and extending these capabilities to crypto in July, Robinhood has seen over 150,000 customers establish agentic trading accounts. Currently, these agents are utilized nearly 30 million times daily, according to company reports. The scale of this adoption speaks volumes about trader interest in automation. Abhishek Fatehpuria, vice president of product management at Robinhood, remarked, “Whether you’re an expert or just starting out with AI, you’ll gain an edge by using Robinhood.” This sentiment highlights the platform's ambitions—it's not just about basic trading anymore; it’s about elevating the trading experience through technology.
Extended Trading Hours for Stocks
Additionally, the platform plans to introduce 24/7 trading for a select group of U.S. stocks and ETFs through the alternative trading system, Bruce ATS. This feature is expected to launch early next year, pending regulatory approval, thereby augmenting its existing 24 Hour Market that commenced in 2023, operating from Sunday at 8 p.m. ET to Friday at 8 p.m. ET. The demand for around-the-clock trading is indicative of investors' desire for more flexibility; after all, markets don’t sleep, and neither should trading opportunities.
Furthermore, Robinhood is set to enhance its prediction markets hub by adding earnings contracts sourced from Cboe, allowing traders to speculate on key metrics such as earnings performance. This expands the scope of investment strategies available on the platform, allowing users to engage in educated guesses about company performance, offering yet another tool in trading arsenal. As Tenev put it, “We’re committed to making Robinhood the premier platform for active traders, equipping them with tools once reserved for hedge funds and investment banks.” This claim positions Robinhood at the intersection of accessibility and professional-grade tools—if they can deliver on that promise, the implications for retail trading could be significant.
Implications and Future Outlook
What this means for you—whether you're a seasoned trader, a curious novice, or a skeptical observer—is an evolving platform that aims to challenge traditional trading dynamics. With powerful features like AI assistants, increased leverage options, and around-the-clock trading, Robinhood is daring to reshape how trading is approached by everyday investors.
However, there’s an undeniable skepticism that arises from these developments. The increased complexity of trading products, combined with high leverage, could lead to higher risks for unsophisticated investors. If Robinhood is serious about empowering individuals, it must also focus on user education and risk management tools to protect them from potential pitfalls. As the platform expands its offerings, keeping its users informed and safe should remain a top priority. The balance between convenience and caution is a delicate one that Robinhood must navigate carefully.
